As part of our continued efforts to modernize and improve Inline Manual, we are sunsetting the Authoring Tool and replacing it with the Builder. This change brings significant benefits, including a modern WYSIWYG editor and an improved user experience with new drag-and-drop functionality.

Why the Change?

The old WYSIWYG editor used in the Authoring Tool is outdated and no longer compatible with modern browsers. While you can still update content (version 1) in the Topic Editor via the portal (where the old WYSIWYG is still available), the Authoring Tool will eventually become obsolete due to changes in browser support, particularly with Google Chrome's shift from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3. Google does not make it clear how long the Authoring Tool will continue to function.

The Builder introduces a more modern and flexible experience, known as the New Experience:

  • New WYSIWYG Editor: Inline content editing with drag-and-drop capabilities.

  • Modern Interface: Clean, intuitive design for a better authoring experience.

  • Block-based System: Build guides and steps using content blocks for improved flexibility and customization.

Download and start using the Builder

You can install the Builder extension from Google's Chrome Web Store.

Key Changes

  1. Content Version 1 (Old Content)

    • The old WYSIWYG editor is not available in the Builder.

    • You can still update content properties for steps, such as position, launchers,... in the Builder.

    • Content can still be edited in the Topic Editor on the portal where the old editor remains available.

  2. Content Version 2 (New Experience Content)

    • Any new content created through the Builder will use the new WYSIWYG editor and content structure.

    • Drag-and-drop functionality makes it easy to build and customize steps.

    • Blocks allow for greater flexibility in formatting and layout.

Support for Migration

We understand that transitioning to a new tool can present challenges, especially if you have custom CSS applied to your existing content. Customizations may need to be adapted, as the New Experience handles CSS differently and more efficiently.

To assist you, we have a dedicated migration program to help you move your content to the New Experience seamlessly. If you encounter issues or need help migrating custom content, please reach out to our support team at [email protected].

What Happens to My Existing Content?

  • No Immediate Changes: Existing content created in the Authoring Tool will continue to work as usual.

  • Gradual Transition: There is no need to move to the New Experience right away. You can continue using your old content while gradually introducing new content created with the Builder.

  • Future Decommissioning: Over time, older content can be phased out at your pace as you transition to the New Experience.

Next Steps

  1. Start exploring the Builder to create new content.

  2. Reach out to our support team if you need assistance with migrating or adapting custom CSS.

The Builder is designed to provide a more streamlined, modern, and flexible experience. While the Authoring Tool will remain available as long as browser support allows, we encourage you to start transitioning to the New Experience to take full advantage of the improved features and ensure long-term compatibility.

Thank you for your continued partnership, and we are here to support you every step of the way!
